Here is a quick over view if you missed it:
The human mind process 400 million bits of information per second, but we are only consciously aware of 2,000 of those bits. For example were you aware of the feeling of the seat or bed under you before I mentioned it?
In order to determine what those 2,000 bits are our mind deletes, distorts and generalizes information. So if you are focused on all the things you don't have and all the things you're not, what do you think you are going to see when you look around?
All of the things you are lacking
If you start to change the way you see a situation, and get yourself to see what you stand to learn from the experience and what you are grateful for, what do you think you will start to notice?
It can often be hard for someone who is stuck in a certain thought pattern to see the opportunity in something when they are so used to seeing the hardship. They tend to be the people who are at the effect of life. These are the people that speak about life knocking them down and constantly throwing challenges their way.
What do you think happens when you believe life keeps knocking you down?
You actually start searching for the problem in things. You expect things to come crashing down whenever something is good, so you focus on all the potential things that can go wrong.
Can you really be surprised then, when things do go wrong?
When you first start to change your focus from problem to possibility it can be difficult. People can get hung up on this idea of good and bad. What I am talking about is not ignoring the bad and focusing on the good, what I am talking about is seeing the opportunity in the bad.
For example, have you ever been in a situation you did not want to be in? Say for example a job you didn’t like. You can do one of two things, you can go to work every day being miserable about being there, whinging and groaning every chance you get about how horrible it is OR you could accept that you aren’t happy there and then decide to take the opportunity to get the most out of your time there.
Which of those two options do you think is going to grow you faster and further?
The Noticer by Andy Andrews is a book I would recommend to highlight the power of perspective and what it can do for your life. This book is the best tool in helping you start to make this mental shift. This true story, describes how a change in perspective helped a homeless man become more successful than most of us do in our lifetimes. He did this by seeing opportunity where he once saw despair.
